Race Report – Mark Whitehouse, Beaverbrooks 10K

We had a lot of members running in the Beaverbrooks 10K road race over the weekend, here is Mark Whitehouse with the race report below:

Sunday saw the 40th anniversary edition of the Trinity Hospice Beaverbrooks 10km road race. A fast, flat, sometimes hot, always windy race along Blackpool promenade from Gynn Square to the Pleasure Beach and back. It’s a closed road event and as it’s held a little later at 11am it provides a lot of support from spectators either purposely there for the race or just there by accident. It’s not unusual to be chased by a stag weekend watching from a bar until they fall in a heap 100 yards later.
The field was over a 1000 strong with massive support from Wyre Triathlon Club with at least 15 of our runners present. This year this was represented by a lot of the team in Blackpool orange, hopefully this time next year that will be replaced by the WyTri colours!
The usual jostling for position started early doors. Some of us made our way to a few rows from the start line but as we passed under the sub 40 minute flag and references were made from the start line DJ that we were the elites…..we realised we had gone too far.
On the way out there was a firm breeze against us and on the way back the temperature without that breeze became tropical. It was as fast as ever and there was a substantial amount of PBs had within the team, with more than 1 of those being under 40 minutes. Some incredible efforts out there. Local Blackpool runner Luke Minns won the race in a tremendous 32:36 and 7 of the Wyre Tri team came in the top 100, with 2 in the top 15 – well done to Joe Tyldesley and Jack Wilson on that one! The main thing was we all beat the bloke dressed as Blackpool tower….I think.
I promised not to mention it, again, but Joe Rutland and I were drafted by some chap for literally 9.9kms (with photo evidence to prove it) who then did me in the last 100 metres. I really need to work on those sprint finishes.
A fantastic race for all abilities, looking forward to edition 41.

A big shout out to all our runners:
